Aperture 1
Whistler, BC — Employee Rental Housing
A Whole Building of Flooring for Whistler Employee Housing
About the Project
Aperture 1 is part of Sitka & Cedar, the Whistler Housing Authority’s new rental community at Cheakamus Crossing — and one of the very first BC Builds projects in the province. Built for the people who keep Whistler running, it brings 104 employee-restricted rental homes, from studios to three-bedrooms, to families and individuals who live and work in the resort. Tantalus Floors took on the flooring for the building from the slab up — four floors of one- to three-bedroom suites, every corridor, and every stair.
Across the building we installed 38,400 square feet of commercial-rated, glued-down XL Flooring Flexi Plank vinyl — a floor chosen to take years of daily use in a busy rental community and hold its footing. Helping ease Whistler’s housing shortage is work we’re proud to be part of.
The Challenge
An entire four-storey building had to be brought to a dead-flat, install-ready slab before a single plank went down — across 38,400 square feet of suites, corridors, and stairwells, on a construction schedule shared with every other trade.
- Flatten the whole building — Concrete slabs across four floors had to be levelled to a consistent, glue-ready finish so a commercial vinyl floor could bond cleanly and wear evenly.
- Built for rental traffic — Employee housing runs hard year-round; the floor and the prep beneath it had to stand up to constant move-ins and daily wear.
- Keep pace on site — 104 homes on a fixed completion meant the flooring scope had to move fast without cutting corners on the substrate.
Our Solution
We put a crew of seven on site and self-levelled the entire building — roughly 1,600 bags of self-leveller — to give every floor a true, install-ready surface. Onto that we glued down 38,400 square feet of commercial-rated vinyl throughout, and finished 114 stairs to match.
- Self-levelled top to bottom — A seven-person crew poured roughly 1,600 bags of self-leveller across all four floors, correcting every slab so the finished floor sits flat and bonds for the long haul.
- Commercial-rated glued-down vinyl — 38,400 square feet of hard-wearing, fully adhered vinyl built for the daily traffic of a rental community.
- 114 stairs installed — Every stair run finished to match the suites and common areas, tying the building together underfoot.
- Whole-building scope — Four floors of one- to three-bedroom suites, corridors, and stairwells handled as one continuous package.
- Sequenced with the build — Prep and install staged floor by floor to keep pace with the trades on a fixed completion date.
The levelling is the part no one sees once the suites are furnished — but it’s what keeps a high-traffic floor flat and quiet for years. It’s the difference between a floor that gets replaced and one that lasts.

Harrison did a great job refinishing our badly damaged fir flooring in Pemberton. Like new again — thank you!
The team at Tantalus Floors did an incredible job installing a new hardwood floor throughout my house. Very pleased and would definitely recommend.
My floors were in such bad condition — the amazing job Harrison did literally made them look new. So reassuring to find a company with this dedication to professionalism and results.
Infinite patience while we tweaked for two years — then all business. On time. On budget. No surprises. We have already recommended Tantalus multiple times, and this is the first Google review I have ever written.
