Overnight Refinishing in a Working Whistler Spa
About the Project
Scandinave Spa Whistler asked us to refinish the existing wide-plank Fir floors through its foyer, main stairs, massage pavilion and Solarium 2. The floors were staying. The goal was to bring them back and protect them for the foot traffic a spa sees every day.
The spa needed to stay open to guests throughout, so the whole job was planned around its hours rather than ours.
The Challenge
A refinish means sanding, staining and multiple coats of finish, each with its own dry time. Doing that in an operating spa meant every area had to be ready for guests again by morning, with no disruption to the day.
- Open every day: The spa could not close for the work, so each area had to be handed back ready for guests each morning.
- Stairs in the scope: The main stairs plus three flights of stairs in the massage pavilion added hand work to an already tight schedule.
- Commercial traffic: The finish had to stand up to steady guest and staff traffic.
Our Solution
We worked night shifts, 9pm to 8am, so the spa could run as usual during the day. The existing wide-plank Fir was refinished with Bona DriFast stain in Jacobean, then sealed with Bona Traffic HD, a commercial waterborne finish, in a matte sheen.
- Night shifts: 9pm to 8am, so guests never saw the work in progress.
- Existing floor kept: The original wide-plank Fir was refinished, not replaced.
- Jacobean stain: Bona DriFast stain in Jacobean across every area.
- Commercial finish: Bona Traffic HD in a matte sheen, built for heavy foot traffic.
- Full scope: Foyer, main stairs, massage pavilion (including three flights of stairs) and Solarium 2.
Refinished overnight, open to guests every morning.
