The Brief

About the Project

Britannia Beach began as a mining company town on Howe Sound. As part of Britannia Village’s renewal, the site was raised two metres and its original buildings were moved, restored and returned. One of them is the historic School House, now home to Autostrada Oyster Bar & Grill, where original first-growth timber sits alongside a modern fit-out by Vancouver design studio Ste. Marie.

Its Fir floor is more than 100 years old. Our scope was to add new narrow-plank Fir matched to it, floor the booths in Fir, and refinish old and new together so the room reads as one floor.

The Challenge

The Challenge

New boards had to sit beside century-old Fir without reading as a repair. Old growth and new timber take stain differently, and a restaurant floor has to carry service traffic from open to close.

How We Solved It

Our Solution

We installed new narrow-plank Fir matched to the original boards and floored the booths in Fir. Then the whole floor, old and new, was sanded and refinished together in Bona DriFast stain in Jacobean, under a Bona Traffic HD commercial finish.

A century-old School House floor, extended and back in service.
